School of Chinese Medicine
The School of Chinese Medicine at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) stands as a pioneering institution in the global advancement of Chinese medicine. Since its establishment in 1999 as the first UGC-funded institution in Hong Kong to offer full-time undergraduate programmes in Chinese medicine and pharmacy in Chinese medicine, the School has been committed to nurturing a new generation of high-calibre professionals in the field. By integrating modern medical science with traditional wisdom, the School has earned an international reputation for excellence in teaching, research, and Chinese medicine healthcare services.
The School provides a comprehensive academic pathway, offering programmes at the sub-degree, undergraduate, postgraduate and research postgraduate levels, including Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. This rigorous training equips graduates with the critical knowledge and skills to lead and innovate within the evolving global healthcare landscape.
At the forefront of scientific innovation, the School is a dynamic research hub with 14 research institutes and centres dedicated to the standardisation and internationalisation of Chinese medicine. Its research is strategically focused on three key areas of global health significance: Precision Medicine and Phenomics; Translational Medicine and Innovative Drug Discovery; and the Authentication and Testing of Chinese Medicines. This commitment to evidence-based research is underscored by its remarkable faculty, with over 45% of its scholars ranked among the world’s top 2% of scientists, positioning the School as a leading institution in the field.
The School’s academic and research excellence is supported by an extensive clinical network comprising 16 Chinese medicine clinics across Hong Kong, operated both directly by the School and in collaboration with the Hospital Authority and non-profit organisations. This network provides a robust platform for student training, clinical research, and community healthcare. The integration of theory, research, and practice delivers a significant positive impact on public health and sets the definitive benchmark for quality in Chinese medicine. In 2021, HKBU was selected by the HKSAR Government to operate Hong Kong’s first-ever Chinese Medicine Hospital.
